RVM was created by three of the most respected skateboarders in my hometown, Kuching- my cousin Joseph Romey, Joseph (sibu) Naun, Ashly Nandong, and myself. It was created about 6 years ago in our beloved Kuching, where skateboarding was not very well established but our spirits were high in keeping the scene as lively as possible. RVM was a skate magazine, focused on Kuching’s local scene, it was the first ever of its kind (at least i’ve never an official skate magazine for Kuching) and yeah history was made by us! Our first and only issue was distributed at a local skate contest which we all boycotted due to the shitty skatepark that they wasted our excitement for.
RearViewMirror was not a well discussed name when we picked it. Joseph Sibu just shouted it out in a car ride when I was driving all four of us to a skatespot (apparently he was grilling my car’s rvm at the time during a brief silent moment in the car). We agreed instantly without a single hesitation. How well the name described our scene at the time and our purposes for the magazine was automatically being our conversation the rest of the car ride.
The first issue was written by myself, with photography, editing, and other article contributions by ash, j.romey and joe sibu. We covered local skate spots, talked about what is skateboarding in Kuching, and interviewed a couple local skaters and their own Kuching skateboarding stories. Nothing like this ever been done, because RVM took it truely Kuching. We felt that Kuching had a very unique scene compared to the rest of Malaysian skate scene and we had to put it into media, thus RVM was born.
