IN YOUR FACE!

•January 25, 2012 • Leave a Comment

Kuching skateboarding scene has made lotsa hype recently, starting with Myth d.i.y park, K5, new shops and shop riders, and now the same crew who worked hard to keep the scene alive has produced the much anticipated skate video In Your Face! I took this opportunity in ask the filmer, Dee Joe or Lundy as I call him, all about the video and what it means to the future of Kuching’s skateboarding. Premiering on January 29 at the infamous Ruai Bar, don’t be lame! Go party and support for the Love of Skateboarding! Please comment on your favorite part of the video after the premier!

In your Face! Whose face?

To those faces who have never believed in us seriously, who doubted our ability to produce this video, and those who have never appreciated the local talents here in Kuching. the video is to prove these skeptics wrong. thus, we can tell them, “this is our video, proudly made in kuching. these are kuching’s pride; the riders, our  local talent, and this is something directly in your face!”

What are you trying to accomplish with this video?

What am i trying to accomplish? I dont know dude. I just wanna do this for fun and it  turned to something so serious now. Everyone so excited about the premier as well. And im scared to show what ive did.hope everyone will like their part. Its a fun project actually, and thanks to nail video that was done back then with my idol hanafiah for the video had inspire me all this while. Nail guys, u guys still rock kuching skate scene!

How did you select who’s in the video? is it homies only or random?

All riders are selected randomly as neither do they represent k5 nor myth.Iyf represents all era of riders such as umar sulaiman and zienal who are considered seniors whom i look up to last time. In your face comprises of groups such as K5 and myth but towards the end it combines into 1 big group in kuching who has fun filming together. ive never met some of the riders before and now we are friends.  We also have  wild crazy young bloods  who are currently the top kuching skateboarders like syed  rusydie, gadd, gary, pian, alvin and  nasir. And to show how random i am in selecting the riders, we have afif ghani from kk who actually took the time to fly to kch and be part of iyf too. But Technically, Iyf represents all!

who’s the easiest to film with and who’s the hardest, and why?

I reckon syed rusydie, gadd francis and zainol  are the easist to film because they are Super tactical and super smooth to work with! I enjoyed filming with them, especially when they nailed all the insane tricks,  and it made the person behind the camera sounded they had just achieved orgasm, Like, “awwhhhh dammmnn/fuckkkk!” Hahaha! And The hardest to film? I think that would be myself because i turn into a shy person on-screen! Whenever its my turn to get film, i would have butterflies in my tummy haha! Trust me, there are differences between being onscreen and offscreen.

how long does it take to get this film done and are you satisfied with the outcome?

The filming started in early september 2011 and it was supposed to be screened in november. I’ve never planned to make the production this big but i got some encouragement from afif ghani and ashley nandong to produce something major, like a premier for the video. So we decided to push the dateline further to early january 2012 to be able to produce a fine production. Rating between 1-5, my level of satisfaction is 4 but 5 despite knowing all in your face riders can do better and produce more clips but the weather during the period of the shooting didnt look promising, plus most of the boys were busy with classes, work, getting drunk and laid, and festive seasons too haha! However, im happy, proud, and satisfied with their contribution for the video.

We skated together a long time ago, and then you kinda disapeared from the scene for a while, and now back and get very involved. What makes you come back into skateboarding?

Yea..good all days, hardy with his bicycle v 1.0 then upgraded to c70 v 2.0 riding to chermai jaya to skate. I stopped skating in 2002 because i had problems with my right ankle, so i decided to take a hiatus. However, after 10 years, i cant help myself but to try skating again (alone) at tabuan jaya park, where i met ashley nandong and he invited me to mythpark and i was like, “Damn! Since when kuching has a concrete skatepark?”. So i started meeting some of my old friends and skated together again like a family and thats why im back in the scene. I just miss everything about the good old days especially when rupert rage closed down. i think now its time where everyone should work together and get the scene moving again!

I haven’t been back in 4 years, but I make sure I keep up with what’s going on there…and there are plenty of young breed of skateboarders in Kuching..I think it’s so fucking cool and I hope it will just continue to be so! What do you think?

Kuching scene? Yea, from time to time u can see more and more talents joining up every competition in kuching and theyre all good. Forget about joining if u only have switch smith, they can do nollie smith, bs board shove out. How crazy is that?its happening in kuching dude!  I hope this number of skateboarders will continue to shine to keep the scene alive. With many places to skate and variety obstacle provide at various places, it should be no problem for them to progress in the near future. Keep pushing and keep learning.

So tell me what the premier is gonna be like? A wild party?

The premier of iyf is gonna be a calm, relaxing gathering for all skateboarders and its enthusiasts in kuching. Like, obviously NOT! Haha! For sure its gonna be wild! There will be a competition which is a game of skate! But we change the rules a lil’ bit. Its not s.k.a.t.e., like if u dont nail the tricks, but its m.a.b.u.k (drunk) where u have to drink 1shot of tuak if u dont nail your tricks! And yes, when all skateborders gather around especially at a place like ruai reggae bar, its gonna be epic! Like omg i can feel it coming! Well, im gonna take a rest for awhile, enjoy skating to learn new tricks, chilling out with everyone and if theres a high demand for another skate video, perhaps im going to do in your face 2 in july 2012.

What’s next? And shoutouts!!

Shoutouts? Thanks rvm, thank u kuching skateboarders, thank u myth, thank u k5,rupert rage, royjen collections, sarawak review, seventhtribe, ruai reggae bar, republic of photograpers crew, inheritance project from kk, and lastly Shades of arts,  you guys are awesome! For the rest, lets do this epic and wild! So head over to ruai reggae bar this 29th january 2012 and lets have fun! To all lovers, calll me~ to all the haters, In Your Face!

ANALYZER with Gadd Francis

•December 2, 2011 • Leave a Comment

By now you all must have already known about Kuching’s first skateboarder sponsored by a local skate shop- Seventh Tribe, that’s right! Gadd Francis! and of course you know about his ability on the skateboard, although i’ve only seen it on videos, I can only imagine how awesome he is in real life..I can’t wait to rip with this guy back home. So, to honor his achievement and to salute Seventh Tribe skate shop in giving back to Kuching’s skate community, I asked Gadd a few questions and made him RVM’s ANALYZER:

How does it feel like to be the 1st ever sponsored skater in kuching?

Well, you know I know that it feels so good to finally get sponsored but to be the “First Born”? That’s even cooler! It’s definitely an honour.

How’s 7th tribe treating you and what’s your responsibility as their rider?

The 7th Tribe guys, Alvin Gamar & Joshua Caesar Adrian are super cool. Awesome lads. Pretty laid back and have I mentioned them being “super cool”? Hahaha. As for the responsibilities part, I think all I have to do is just SKATE and have more fun with the brand that I’m using which is Jart.

Tell me about your skating routine, warmup somewhere? Spots? Tricks?

Unlike the skaters on the other side (US, Europe, etc.), we seldom skate for long hours just ’cause most of us are still studying or working. I’m currently working so I get to skate for roughly around 2-3 hours on weekdays but much longer during the weekends. Now I usually skate at K5, an indoor-like spot with smooth surface. Always a fun sesh with the guys there. Great people to skate and to be with. Warm up tricks? I’d say a nosegrind simply because I like doing ‘em.

Myth has become a big reflection of kch skateboarding scene, now that it’s not physicaly there…does it change anything?

The final “Goodbye” from MYTH did leave a huge impact on everyone but what’s done is done. You can’t take back something that’s originally not yours. Now the scene here is growing bigger and better than I’d ever hope for. New faces here and there, old faces coming back. Man… That’s like the one thing that I was really hoping to see. All the “Legends” and “Legends In The Making” skating together. No hate. Just PEACE, LOVE and RESPECT.

What do you think of skateboarders in kch are like?

The skateboarders here in Kuching are amazing. Each and everyone has their own unique style and tricks. That’s the best part ’cause you get to learn new and different things from all the guys. Kuching’s skateboarding scene has certainly changed a lot if compared to 10 years back.

Tell me your skate influences and inspirations

Right now, internationally, my biggest influences and inspirations are Cory Kennedy and Shane “Nugget” O’Neill. They make me go “Wow!” in every video part that they’re featuring in. Both have their own unique style and insane tricks. I like watching them having fun when they skate. That’s super awesome. Now, locally, I’d have to say Hanafiah. He’s “The Man”. I haven’t seen anyone else skating super tech and super comfortable like he does. Wish to see him skate again everyday.

Do you attract more girls now that you’re sponsored?

What??? Hahahaha. I don’t know about that, dude. But I certainly hope so… Hahahahahaha! Otherwise I should just prepare an epic pick-up line and cool pose when I’m around them. Hehehehe…

What would you do to help kch’s skate scene?

If I were to help Kuching’s skate scene, first thing’s first, I’d propose a new and safer skate park to the one responsible to build one for us because that is what we really need right now. A new and perfect skate park is crucial for us because I extremely believe that with great skate parks, comes great skaters.

Name me 5 favorite spots in kch and why the the no. 1 is no. 1.

1. K5 & MYTH      2. Civic Centre      3. Amphitheater Gap      4. Kingtop Stairs      5. RPR Batu Kawa

K5 & MYTH are number 1 because I’ve landed a lot of tricks that even I never knew I could do. Great place to learn and practice new tricks.

 What’s your hardest trick?

My hardest trick? Hmmmmm… So far it’s the Bigspin Front Board 270 Out. Another trick that I find really scary to do is the Backtail. I had a nasty slam from trying out that trick last time. I guess that’s what makes that trick so damn hard to do. But I finally have the guts to do it now so hopefully I can get that trick down soon.

Shoutouts time!

Thank you God for all of this, thank you so much RVM for this interview and a huge thanks to Alvin Gamar and Joshua Caesar Adrian for sponsoring me. Not to forget Donald Gani for being cool and patient the whole time we were filming for my welcoming part. You guys are the best. To everyone else, PICK UP YOUR BOARDS AND LET’S ROLL! Cheers to everyone! “All You Need Is Love”. PEACE!

A MYTH Letter

•November 10, 2011 • Leave a Comment

To the whole MYTH community, what’s happening right now is what was told to us even during the Nail vid days..it’s just matter of time, and the time is now. I’m not sure if there’s anything more hyped than MYTH in Kuching after Chermai days 10 years ago (even Masja wasn’t as hype in my opinion) . It was second home to me, literally..I won’t miss a day at KC even if I couldn’t skate. Chermai was gone and there was Myth KC. Now Myth is going thru that same fate, but K5 is already being built. This is what skateboarding  and RVM all about- anti establishment! Look at the stadium skatepark, who gives a fuck about that place anymore? Why isn’t anyone making a fb page for it? Or try to rip it apart and build a proper park on your own?or bother to fundraise to fix it? That’s what establishment has to offer skateboarding to Kch. To back what J Romey says- we been thru this plenty of times, (I remember we went to a demo in serian to petition for a skate park, so the dewan bandaraya won’t demolish their obstacles-and of course they did), we even boycotted the 1st ever comp at stadium by registering but not actually skating in it because of how much we hated the park.. but we knew, the only way to get over it is to keep skating, and have fun. When u skate, u have fun, when u have fun, u won’t give a fuck but to keep on going and build more on your own. I will truely miss the place as it is very meaningful to me as it is to all of you! Enjoy your last session on 11.11.11..Just don’t quit! Be proud that you are part of this subculture and don’t let what the masses silent you. They can take skateboarders out of Myth Park, but they will never get Myth out of skateboarders. For the love of skateboarding.

Sincerely,
HB.

It’s the first Friday of the month! and now, RVM will be bringing you news and updates every First and Last Friday of the month so you can come visit and checkout the latest from Philly, Kuching and every where else RVM makes its presence. In the mean time, keep skating and spread the love!

Debuting this first First Friday, Philly’s d.i.y Bridge Spot. I’ve been spending alot of time skating here this past year if i’m not going out to street spots with my homies and it’s just few mins skating for me to get there. It’s been around almost  2 years now, built by skateboarders living in the city. This past summer the Baker and Deathwish crew came to town and had a warmup session here and I was lucky enough to there at the right time to see them ripped the place up!

Kuching’s MYTH Skatepark, D.I.Y or DIE!

•October 12, 2011 • 2 Comments

If you’re a skateboarder living in Borneo or perhaps anywhere in Malaysia, you should have a fair knowledge about this spot, from being a “who cares?!” for years, to a “oh shit, lets make documentaries about this place!” in just a few months. The progression has been an amazing story of Kuching skateboarders’ independent community and social development. Myth started almost 10 years ago, led by RVM’s own Joseph Romey, Ashly Nandong, myself with the help of skateboarders around King Center’s neighborhoods from Tabuan Dayak, Tabuan Jaya, Bayang Estate, who are now leading the continuos progression of the park- Gary Abraham, Chary, Brandon, Jason Ma to name a few and a strong number of new recruits who are equally eager to build what they’ve always wanted to have.

Kuching has always have skateboarders and we all long for a proper park where we could just skate and hangout, but that, even today is just a fantasy. I personally was involved in pitching in on behalf of fellow skateboarders about the issue of a skatepark in our beloved hometown to the authority, and what did we get? A disaster, a display of waste of taxpayers money and everyone’s time- you know exctly what I mean. As we were doing that, we kept on hearing skateparks were being built in other cities, except for ours. So why sit and wait while you can do it yourself? D.I.Y park is not something new in Kuching, people just didn’t care about it and they were destroyed when they were at their prime time. I remember watching the municipal truck bulldozed a pyramid ledge that I helped built with Joseph Naun at Chermai Jaya campus, our rails and boxes at Kenyalang carpark taken away, MBKS, Pending, Sg Maong, Serian, Batu 12, and even at King Center itself- it was at 2 different spots in King Center before it moved to where it is now. Most of these spots are gone and forgotten except for  few of them because of what were left for among the skateboarders, by those who built it. King Center’s Myth park has seen plenty of reconstructions and it was never abandoned, because such a positive vibe at the spot was established and it was too strong to leave and even when it was only left with a rotting platform for a manny pad, it still got beating from rolling wheels on the tiled floors. After I left town in 2005, so did the rest of RVM crew who created Myth park. I was told that the scene was dead, but was pleasantly surprised to see that there were kids skating the park when I went back to visit in 2008- just learning because they couldn’t do it when the park was packed, and now that it’s almost empty they took the opportunity to skate as much as they could. These kids, thinking that they’re only learning how to skate, in my opinion had helped to keep skateboarding alive at Myth. Over the years, they’ve gotten a lot better and the older guys came back to skate the park and were amazed by how good they got. Next thing you know, they started building again, more and much better obstacles than before.

This year, Myth is in the spotlight of many fronts, in the media, it’s an underground social revolution for Kuching’s skate scene. Building of obstacles were done progressively- with only a couple things in April, to all concrete obstacles including spine, quarterpipes, jump ramp, pole jams, ledge and manny pad today. The support was superb from fellow skaterboarders from all over Kuching, the rest of Sarawak, KK, and KL. 2 contests had already been held since the park had a new face, local newspapers, radio, and tv were all hyped in covering the events and in getting to know how did Myth do it! I’m equally stoked about it especially knowing what we started years ago is now getting to where we wanted it to be. I followed the progression of Myth like a fucking stock broker watching the indexes trends, and still am today as much as I can. I’d like to thank the whole Myth community for making it happening, epecially to the person who is responsible in igniting the d.i.y spirits among Myth skaters- Ashly Nandong.

You most likely have read all the coverage and seen the pics and interview about Myth’s success this year. But what interest me more is its future. Myth has set a standard that has never been seen in Kuching’s skateboarding scene. The party has started and it’s now just gonna get better and better? Of course! because they’ve been in it since the beginning, they all brought their own beers, share among themselves, enjoy the same kinda jams, and they welcome everyone. The Myth party is not the kinda party that’ll last forever, it can get busted anytime just like the other parties we had at Chermai, etc, but that does not mean anything! because we brought the spirit of the party we started to wherever we go and start a new one. Job well done and keep going guys!D.I.Y or DIE!

here’s a montage of Myth taken from its facebook page courtesy of Myth’s own Donald Gani:
